In British Columbia, one in every four children is not thriving.
This is a heartbreaking statistic and it is our mission to do something about it.
For many children in our part of the world, a school is a home away from home. It is where friendships are made, milestones are achieved and dreams are inspired. But it is also a place where children may experience teasing, isolation and develop a diminished self-concept. Some lack the skills they need to build solid friendships.
These years are pivotal in a child's social, emotional and mental development. We know that school staff want to provide their students with a safe, nurturing, inclusive environment, but they are overcapacity and under-resourced to be able to do it fully. They can’t face these challenges alone. It is up to all of us to do what we can to provide the support needed to help all students thrive.
Through our research we know that trained, peer leaders are capable of being a key part of turning this around. These intermediate school-aged children are eager to learn, to lead and to be of service. They are an under-utilized resource capable of creating positive change. All they need are a set of tools and training - and that's where we come in...
At the Social and Emotional Leadership Foundation (SELF), we train intermediate-level children to mentor primary school children
to reverse social isolation, improve social dynamics and encourage scholastic achievement.
We are redefining school. We are redefining the school experience. We welcome you to join us.
About Us

places of belonging.
Our School Programs
Our school programs are designed to support schools in building capacity by leveraging the older students to exponentially strengthen the sense of belonging for all students in their school.
Our ProD Day Workshops
Our ProD Day Workshops are designed to support schools in making social and emotional learning both high impact and engaging for students. We offer school-wide ProD days for schools or ProD day workshops for districts wanting to strengthen the sense of belonging in their schools.
